More than 2 in 3 adults in the U.S. are considered to be overweight or obese, according to statistics from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Overweight and obesity are risk factors for type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and other health problems. Not surprisingly, many people are anxious for the best and most effective means possible for shedding unwanted pounds.
Kimberly Lowe, of Muncy, was among those skeptical of using hypnosis to lose weight. Last year, she became a believer after going through a hypnosis program. “You would come out of a hypnosis session feeling better, calmer. I noticed a change overall in how I viewed food, how I thought about it,” she said. “Over the course of about a month, I dropped a good 5 pounds.”
Deborah Miller, a board certified hypnotist, will conduct hypnosis weight loss sessions next month in Hughesville. “Hypnotism is a gentle, effective, side effect-free method of removing emotional blockages and fears, alleviating pain, adapting to life changes, losing weight, and breaking bad habits,” Miller said. “For positive and healthful personal changes, hypnotism has been found to provide quick, comfortable and lasting solutions. It allows you to enhance your God-given talents, including will power and motivation.” The National Institutes of Health has noted that more than 3,000 clinical studies are available proving positive effects of hypnotism. Hypnotism was approved as effective by the American Medical Association as well as the American Psychological Association in 1958. “It’s basically utilizing the subconscious mind,” Miller said. “You are open to learning new things and breaking old habits.”
Lowe said after undergoing the sessions she certainly felt and ate differently, even though, as she put it, “I am a person who is very skeptical of these things.” Edwina Horn, a personal trainer and owner of Live Well Fitness in Muncy became a believer as well, according to Miller. After going through her hypnosis program, she found the natural technique changed the way she looked at food and eliminated cravings for certain foods she wanted to avoid. Horn, Miller noted, also came away feeling more positive and relaxed and even experienced better sleep.
The course is scheduled for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, May 10, 17, 24 and 31, at the Townsend Bed & Breakfast, 160 S. Main St., Hughesville.
Registration at 570-317-4219 is required. More information is at www.HypnosisCanHelp.Me.

Board Certified Hypnotist Deborah Miller recently returned from ten days of continuing education at both the National Guild of Hypnotists Conference, Marlboro, MA and Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, Stockbridge, MA where she completed courses “Hypnosis for Sales People” and “From Womb to the World: Healing Conception, Womb and Birth-Related Imprints and Traumas.” Within the category of enhancing professional excellence, “Hypnosis for Sales People” targets increased self-confidence and competence, decreased self-doubt and negative thinking, and is available via group or private sessions. During “From Womb to the World…” she learned the latest findings in Epigenetics and pre- and perinatal psychology as well as how related imprints create beliefs, behavior patterns and fears and impact day-to-day life and relationships. Other coursework included “Self Hypnosis for Children,” “Ethics and Legal Issues for the Consulting Hypnotist,” “Pre-and Post-Surgical Conditioning—the Process for Better Outcomes and Faster Healing,” and “New Protocols for PTSD.”
Deborah Miller, Schuylkill Haven, attended the 26th annual educational conference and convention of the National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH.net) of Merrimack, N.H., at the Best Western Royal Plaza Hotel & Trade Center, Marlborough, Mass. She, together with leading experts from around the globe, shared the latest insights and techniques to help professional consulting hypnotists bring the value of hypnosis to several areas of the health and wellness fields.
“This was an incredible experience,” Miller said in a press release. “The networking with internationally based peers was enlightening, and the workshops presented a wealth of insight that I know my clients will value.”
A primary area of focus for Miller was the field of study that covers the power of the mind on the physical body (including the mind’s ability to alter its DNA) called Neuro Hypnosis, Epigenetics, Gamma Hypnosis. Other topics of study included refreshers on the use of hypnosis for sleep, impotence, smoking cessation, children’s issues and weight loss.
Miller also attended a seminar on psychosomatic illnesses with master hypnotist Gerald Kein and, during a two-day workshop, became certified in Soul Entrainment™ by Karen Paolino Correia, CH. More information about Miller can be found at www.HypnosisCanHelp.Me.

"Haven Resident, International Folk-singer Co-write Song That will Debut at Penn State Schuylkill Performance" By Gerry Ulicny
SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - The idea that music can change your life comes to the area with a generous spirit as long-time Schuylkill Haven resident Deborah Miller teams up with international touring performer Jackie Tice to create a positive musical experience for Schuylkill County residents.
At 7 p.m. Jan. 19, Tice will perform a selection from her vast repertoire of original music for voice, guitar and native flute at the Morgan Auditorium at Penn State Schuylkill.
"It's a world-class performance presented locally and it's free," Miller said, stressing the "free" part. "A perfect performance for a cold winter's evening, I'm so glad we could bring it here."
Miller is excited about the project because she is certified in neuro-linguistic programming and a student of hypnotherapy - just one month away from her master certification.
A music industry professional with 15 years experience as artistic director, talent buyer, booking agent, general manager and award-winning producer, she believes that music is the perfect delivery system for the beneficial NLP verbiage and the tenets of NLP: the concept that you can improve your life by improving your thoughts and adopting positive language and creating positive imagery.
"Hypnotherapy and NLP are used by most professional and Olympic athletes as well as many performers and creative people to optimize their natural abilities, it's not just for quitting smoking and weight loss anymore. These therapies allow you to enhance your God-given talents," Miller said.
To this end, Miller has begun her own series of compositions, and the show will feature the premiere of a song called "Song for the Higher Self (I am Love)" that was conceived by Miller and co-written with Tice. Miller is also working on several other songs with "beneficial lyrics."
Music has the power to inspire, motivate, relax or embolden us. We need only look to the anthems of our nations, schools and teams for proof. Just about everyone has felt the touch of feeling in a hymn, a fight song, a funeral march or a ballad. In her performances, Tice gently embraces the power of music through compositions that resonate on a global level yet touch the audience members in individual ways.
Although Tice and Miller are hoping to offer something more than just a beautiful collection of tunes, all of that may be just a bonus to the many fans who simply enjoy the music.
Tice has used her guitar, rattles and Native American flutes - choices inspired by her mixed Cherokee and Eastern European roots - in performances on five continents, including numerous appearances at United Nations events. She has earned a reputation as an international artist expressing the "relationship of nature and human nature" through her music.
"The major purpose of my work as an artist is elevating our relationship to the earth and revealing our bond to all people of the earth" Tice said.
Also among her credits, Tice can claim a Best Female Artist nomination at the 2009 Native American Music Awards for her CD "MorningSky Drum Song," took home the prize in the Best Singer-Songwriter category at the 2009 Lehigh Valley Music Awards and received the 2006 Indian Summer Music Awards Best Pop Song award for her song "Second Skin." She has also been featured in Sing Out magazine, and gets air play on radio stations worldwide. She recently returned from a tour of performances in Spain, Italy and Switzerland.
Miller urges people to come out and take advantage of the "opportunity for an evening of free, beautiful music designed to raise your spirits and warm your heart."
